Photography Soup (September 3, 2007)

Around the Internets

  • Don't forget to vote in our poll. Yours could be the deciding vote, the one that forces a recount! The Olympus E3/E-P1 is now going neck and neck with the Nikon D3 as the most exciting DSLR of the season. The Nikon D300 is a few steps behind, solidifying the #3 spot.
  • DigitalCamera.Jp reports on CIPA reactions to the latest EU tariff antics (computer-translated link) concerning digital cameras and other electronics. I hope this does not result in the intentional dumbing of movie modes in order to avoid some arbitrarily silly tariff structure put in place by bureaucrats.
  • New news you can use at the Imaging Insider
  • If you missed Roland Lim's Canon 40D review, be sure not to miss it today :) It's probably the best 40D review published so far, with the camera being out just a few days! And Roland is discussing his review in this dpreview discussion thread. An interactive review! Aren't the Internets wonderful? (Take that Andrew Skeen!).
  • Some interesting stories and tips from pro photographer David Ziser

    Overheard in the dpreview forums
  • If it's FREE, I won't take three, I'll take them all! Discussion on free photography software on the net, including Google's Picasa, part of the Google Pack which is nice, IrfanView, and a few more.
  • Why is Ken Rockwell so controversial? The drama continues
  • And let's give the Leica M8 some air time. The Leica M8 as a P&S
  • Have you cancelled your 40D order?. And some spirited 40D AF discussion (you knew that was coming!). And if you are one of the ruler shooters be sure to stock up on rulers during the back to school sale. Some of the office super stores are practically giving them away.
  • Is this the beginning of the end of sports photography as we know it? (no, I don't feel fine!)
  • Did Sony lens prices drop?
  • Sigma SD14 review where are you?
  • Modular sensors has been one of the frequent R&D-themed discussions. R&D on paper that is :)
  • What DSLR would you recommend for a first timer?. And a similar one. This user has a process in place.
  • LCD monitor recommendations
  • Fell behind on the Olympus E3 aka E-P1? You can catch up with this thread.
  • This is a bizarre thread
  • Everyone's a critic. They want to put the "review" back in dpreview, and not d-preview :)
  • Decisions, decisions, do I get a Canon G7 or Panasonix LX2? (not me, the person asking the question, but I'll take either one if you send it to me ;-)
  • Pro photographers and the local economy
  • Continued reactions on Sean Reid's GX100 review.
  • Also continued from yesterday is the interesting Fuji F31fd vs Fuji F40fd discussion. Speaking of which, is the F31fd good for concerts?. Also on the F31fd: scene modes
  • Opinions on the new Casio 60fps and the Fuji S6000fd
  • If you missed the reaction to the new Nikon Coolpixes, you can catch up now. And on the P5100, which sadly does not have RAW
  • Would you get the FZ30 or FZ50 if they were at the same price?
  • Are prosumers history?. A similar discussion in our sunday editiorial (VIDI)

  • Put the D3 sensor in a D300 body and this Canon user switches to Nikon
  • Canon users discuss Nikon D3 high iso sample pictures
  • Canon 40D user reports and reviews continue with Rottnest, and Portland Rose Garden

  • More new news on the Nikon D3?
  • Nikon vs Canon, when analogies go bad
  • Stop the presses! Nikon D3 high iso samples from IFA Berlin!
  • D300 and 14-bit ADC, the saga continues. And will the D300 be the last of the Mohicans?. But not everyone is drinking the D300 Kool Aid
  • And let's not forget the very capable D200, here are green hell pics
  • And now to our favorite guessing game: What will Sony do? New APS-C sensor?, new kit lens for the mid-range model? This last thread says official release date is September 6, which is just three days away (give or take depending on time zone and time of first "official" leak). Will there be an A100 replacement DSLR? Will they release both new DSLRs? (flagship and midrange). Exactly when will they tell us?. Will it be named A300? A200? A30? A20? A10? A400? Tell us, tell us! So many questions for Sony! We are waiting Sony! Let us know!
  • Some of the cameras mentioned in today's post are pictured below
