New Lens Leaked? New Nikkor AF-S 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 VR? (updated!)

An eagle-eyed Nikon Lens Talk dpreview forum user noticed that a new Nikon lens mentioned in a Thailand Nikon users forum. Latest updates at the bottom of this post.

The lens in question is the Nikkor AF-S 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 VR by Nikon. Reactions to this range across the board in the Nikon Lens Talk forum at dpreview. From "doubting thomases" to "sheer disappointment" to "plastic fantastic" to excitement. As it can be expected since a wide range of users with various levels of expertise and pocket depth congregate there.

When mounted on a DX DSLR (all Nikon mount DSLRs except the lovely Nikon D3) it is the "equivalent" of 24mm-127mm, and with the inclusion of VR makes it a relatively versatile lens to carry around with you. Which is perhaps why there is a lot of excitement about this lens on the part of some users.

Be sure to check the busy dpreview discussion (100+ threads at the moment) for more details, including the file itself.

Update 1/1/08! Pictures of the lens are now on the net!
Nikon Watch, Photography Bay and new blog DSLR Gossip now have pictures of the alleged new lens along with their comments on how this new lens would fit in the Nikon line-up!

Also comments by Ken Rockwell. I couldn't find permalinks to his posts, so if you are reading this a few weeks later, you may have to look around his site to find it.

It seems to make sense because Sony and Olympus have the sensor based stabilization. Sony is running commercials touting this and that Nikon or Canon does not have it. And, Nikon's 18-70 AF-S is long in the tooth (introduced with Nikon D70 in January 2004 - eons in digital age). Adding VR to this and upgrading the optics seem to make sense. Also this will be a a lot better than the Nikon 18-55 VR.
