Canon S5 IS down to $327, is a new superzoom coming?

The Canon S5 IS 12x superzoom is now down to $327 at Amazon. On top of that, you can get a free 2gb Kingston SD card (or a $12.50 discount towards other Kingston cards). Is this new low price a sign that a new announcement is coming from Canon? The Canon S3 IS was announced in February 2006 (PMA), while the S5 IS was announced a bit later, in May 2007.

However since then, the competition has jumped first to 15X (Sony), then to 18X (Olympus, Fuji, Panasonic) and then to 20X (Olympus). Canon and Kodak are the only long zoom competitors that have "stayed" at 12X. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing!

The Powershot S5 IS will be one of the first superzooms listed in our upcoming Superzoom Review Matrix. Until then, here are some S5 IS reviews of note: dpreview, Jeff Keller at DC Resource, and Imaging Resource. Stay tuned for the superzoom review matrix for a longer list.

And speaking of review matrices, be sure to check our DSLR Review listing which badly needs to be updated, and the new Power-compact review matrix which has been recently launched.
