Leica full frame digital rangefinder coming says Leica in a letter

In a letter to Leicaphiles, Leica informs its followers that a full frame digital rangefinder is coming, but the M8 will continue to be updated as well. We've been hearing this buzzing all through the week, but now that the dust has settled, we'll do a mini Leica roundup.

Coverage of this at Amateur Photographer UK, and Photography blog. In the Amateur Photographer UK post, one can infer that Leica sold 4,000 digital M8 cameras. Why? Read the AP UK post to find out :-)

CNet's Underexposed blog talks of the Leica M8 hardware upgrade. More on the hardware upgrade talk at the PDN Pulse blog, Amin foto and our giant 2008 PMA Rumors, Speculations and Predictions post.

Commentary on Leica at the Photo Business Forum blog. More coverage at dpnow, Uber Gizmo, BuzzTracker, Wired's Gadget Lab and many other places.

Amin of Amin Foto just pointed out in the comments section that the upcoming full frame sensor upgrade may also become available to current M8 users.

Now let's see a sampling of the discussions of this in the dpreview Leica forum: perpetual upgrades, heads up on a potential full frame Leica M9, and an older discussion on the hardware upgrade. For more past, present and future discussions, check the Leica dpreview forum.

For a list of reviews of the Leica M8, be sure to check our DSLR Review Matrix. Well, I should say, DSLR and Rangefinder Reviews Matrix :-)

The Leica M8 is currently available at B&H Photo for $5500, in black and in silver chrome.

Some are saying that the FF sensor will be made available as a future upgrade for the M8. Now that would be impressive!

I read that somewhere as well, but I can't find it now. It must be somewhere in one of the 40 browser windows I have open!
