New Canon SD890 IS, SD790 IS and SD770IS, a new trio of Powershots!

An eagle-eyed Dpreview forum user noticed that three new Canon Powershot Elph SD-series digital cameras appeared on the Canon USA website. The official Canon press release at Canon USA. The official apology to hardcore photographers for polluting the market with shiny silvers? In (y)our dreams :)

Meet the Canon SD890IS
Listed at Canon USA, the SD890-IS features a 10mp 1/2.3" CCD sensor, and a 37-185mm (5x) optical zoom lens with optical stabilization. It has a 2.5" LCD and an optical viewfinder as well.

Meet the Canon SD790IS
Listed at Canon USA, the SD790-IS has a 10mp 1/2.3" sensor, a typical 3x (35-105mm) optical zoom lens, with IS, 3" LCD, but no optical viewfinder.

Meet the Canon SD770IS
Listed at Canon USA, it has the same 10mp 1/2.3" sensor and 3x pedestrian zoom lens, but offers OVF fans an optical viewfinder, but the display is smaller, 2.5" instead of 3". So this is a nice thing, people who love OVF at least have an option.

Early Analysis
Goodbye bigger sensors! Canon has jumped on the bandwagon, just like most of the other manufacturers, by flirting with double-digit megapixels for marketing purposes, and abandoning the 1/1.8" to 1/1.7" sensors. The inmates are definitely running the asylum!

The Canon website says June 2008. We haven't found these on Amazon yet, but we did find the Canon WP-DC24 waterproof case for the SD790IS, listed at $240. Not to feel left out, the SD770-IS has its own WP-DC23 waterproof case but at the same price.
