New Olympus E420 DSLR and new 25mm pancake lens

CNet's Crave blog informs us that Olympus is launching a new entry-level DSLR, the E420. The body only price according to CNet will be $500 (Amazon pre-order), while the standard one lens kit (14-42mm) will be $600 (Amazon pre-order). And a mild surprise from Olympus, there is a new 25mm f2.8 prime, and will be bundled with the E420 for $700 (Amazon pre-order).

The current prices for the "older" Olympus E410 are $400 for body only or the one-lens kit, and $510 for the two-lens kit (14-42, 40-150mm). Prices as of right now at Amazon. For reviews of the E410, be sure to check our DSLR Review Matrix.

There are two threads on this in the Olympus dpreview forum, here and here.

More details on this brand new DSLR at the 4/3rds-specific website, 43photo.com. There we learn about the sensor used by this new camera (10mp LiveMOS). This is a very detailed site! Be sure to check it out. Twelve pages of information, along with two PDF data sheets! MUST READ!

The pancake lens (25mm f2.8) goes for $250 on its own (Amazon, pre-order). Pancakes!!! More details on the pancake at 43rds photo.

Needless to say, the combination of the small size of the E420 and the small size of the pancake make this an intriguing option for small-SLR lovers.

More coverage of the announcement at Photography Blog and Digital Camera Review, and DCI.

The lack of image stabilization in the E420, just like the previous E4xx models, may be a disadvantage and a turn-off for those who love the small size. Considering that the E510 has sensor-shift stabilization, it may drive some potential buyers away from the E420.

But the new pancake lens makes the E420 and the E410 more appealing to fans of smaller SLR bodies.
