New Sanyo Xacti VPC-GC9 (a 9mp, 5x hybrid camcorder)

dpnow informs the world that there is a new Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG9 hybrid camcorder/camera thingy. And a quick look at Amazon finds it available for $280, shipping in two to three weeks, and available in silver or black.

Meet the Sanyo CG9 (specs via Amazon product page)
This new hybrid uses a 9mp CMOS sensor and has a 5x optical lens with a pedestrian focal range of 38-190mm. The image stabilization feature is algorithm-based, and kudos to Sanyo for not trying to disguise it under some fancy name.

If you enjoy taking pictures of faces, you will be thrilled to find out that it has a 12-face face recognition (face chaser) feature. Because those faces can make faces ;-)

And it wouldn't be a hybrid if it didn't pay attention to video! It has MPEG4 AVC/H.264 video, which the marketing materials claim takes up 25% less space than other people's MPEG4 cameras.

And another hybrid-priority feature is that it allows you to take still pictures while shooting video. Be sure to check the user manual (when it gets posted online) for details on how this feature works.

It has internal storage of 40MB, which is not exactly enough to create your own epic movie masterpiece. It does of course take SD/SDHC memory cards.

Apart from movies, it also has a connected-copying serial radiography feature (oops, too much computer-translated reading). Let's rewrite the previous sentence: It can take pictures as fast as 5 fps with a buffer depth of 10 images. No details provided on the image sizes as the product description says "up to 5".

The power is provided by the DBL-L20U, a high-voltage, 3.7-volt LiIon. Even though we are big fans of AA batteries, we understand that a slim little thing like this has no space for AA batteries.

More Specs

  • built-in neutral density filter
  • 1/2 - 1/2000 seconds Shutter Speed (pictures)
  • 1/30 - 1/10000 seconds Shutter Speed (movies)
  • Low-light sensitivity: 7 lux (AUTO mode, 1/30 seconds) and 2 lux (Lamp mode 1/15)
  • Auto (ISO 50-400) and Manual (ISO 50/100/200/400/800/1600) Sensitivity
  • Dimensions - Width 2.77 x Depth 1.59 x Height 4.39 (inches)

    Is it a bird?
We are not sure yet how to classify this. It does seem to have a digital camera size imaging sensor, unlike most camcorders and hybrids, so it cannot be easily dismissed as a digital camera. We are still deciding whether to add it to the list of 100+ new digital cameras of 2008.

    Marketing Gone Wild
We noticed this "gem" in the product description:
Take pictures like the pros with up to ten photos with a shutter speed of 5 frames per second.

I have this camera and took it to a friend's wedding to take a few snaps to pass the time, and ended up taking video and photos
faultless photos - brilliant colour and clarity
video was great even inside - I used a small tripod and let it run
bride was absolutely thrilled and everyone commented on how good it was
can buy a travel charger and spare battery from ebay for a few dollars - I bought both for less than $10
