Impact Review: Canon Digital Rebel XSi duet review at dpreview

We have a duet review at dpreview, Phil Askey and Simon Joinson combined to provide a 35-page review of the new Canon Digital Rebel XSi, aka 450D. As always we won't be revealing the outcome of the review, but *cough* HR *cough* you can guess it :) For those who like to jump to the conclusions page first, it is page #34.

The Canon Digital Rebel XSi (450D) was officially announced in late January 2008, and is one of the ten new DSLRs in 2008. Ten new DSLRs and 100+ fixed-lens cameras from the major manufacturers. Are we on pace for 300 considering this is a Photokina year? :)

Reactions to the review
In the home forum (Canon D-Rebel dpreview forum), the Canonites are discussing the review, and Simon joins the discussion to provide some answers.

Meanwhile this thread, focuses on the focus problems mentioned in the review.

The Canon 40D/30D forum engages in shaming practices. Oops, why is Dr Phil writing this post? :) The 40D/30D users are discussing a review finding where the 40D resolution is compared with the new XSi 450D, which uses a new 12mp sensor versus a 10mp sensor in the 40D.

The impatience paid off in this thread, as the review arrived just as yet another Debbie Downer post bloomed. And this is funny, as Phil jokes with Simon in that very thread.

Price Talk Radio
For a quick look on the prices of Canon DSLRs (as of April 30, 2008) we posted the Canon DSLR Price Chart. Of course that was before the instant rebates came in. At that time, the XSi body only was going for $800 and the kit (18-55 EF-S IS) was $900.

A quick look right now at four major bellwethers (B&H, Adorama, Amazon, Circuit City) shows that prices have remained the same - the only discount is at Amazon for the XSi w/18-55 EF-S IS lens for $867 via Ritz, which is a featured 3rd party seller, and operates separately from the Ritz/Wolf camera stores.

Will the XSi get the review bump?
Check back on Monday to find out (non-deterministically) whether the dpreview review had a partial role in getting the XSi 450D a review bump when we post our on-going Digital Camera Top Seller Charts.
