Leaked name? Canon Digital Rebel XS 1000D?

Both Bob Atkins (detailed feasibility and history discussion there) and a Canon SLR Talk dpreview forum user have picked up on a DSLR model name mentioned in the latest Canon software update, the Canon Digital Rebel XS (1000D). What is this you ask?

That is a very good question, because such a DSLR does not currently exist! So what is it? Could it be an upcoming Canon DSLR, or perhaps was this just a fictitious camera name used for internal testing and development that accidentally made it into the public release? Or is this "leaky marketing"?

We do not have an answer, only time (and Canon) will tell. We blog, you decide :)

This is also discussed at Engadget, and The Imaging Insider and in Fred Miranda's forums and Photography On the Net as well.

Obviously Canon fans are anxiously waiting for news of a 5D Mark II or a 3D or 7D or a 50D or full-frame X0D camera, or whatever else Canon has in-store, so they haven't been jumping up and down with joy at the prospect of a new even more entry-level Digital Rebel. But beginners and people on a budget will certainly appreciate a more affordable Digital Rebel. Not to mention photography students.

If Canon could release this for a $499 or $599 pricetag, their sales would sky rocket!

This may perhaps be the mythical $500 out of the gate Digital Rebel? It already has an upper price ceiling, that of the XSi, but it will be interesting to see whether they would go for a $500 DSLR going into the 2008 holiday shopping season or price it higher.
