Weekend Shopper: Beat the Recession Blues!

We had an interesting trio of recession-proof purchase ideas yesterday, so be sure to check them out. They include a $10 monopod, a $130 wide-angle compact, and a DSLR with a 18-200 "digital" superzoom lens for $700. We don't want to sound like a broken record, so we won't repeat them here. Here are the details.

Nikon D300 price drop in progress
The D300 body only is currently at $1720 at Also there, but offered by Cameta, the combo with the 18-200 DX VR lens, MB-D10 grip, 4gb Lexar CF, extra battery, gadget bag and trinkets is $2500.

Sony A200 + 18-70 DT lens = $500 shipped!
Yes, the Sony A200 is getting a nice price cut, sold together with the 18-70 DT lens in the standard kit for $500 at Amazon and other places too. This A200 kit was around $600 a couple of days ago when we posted the Sony DSLR Price Charts. If you are not tempted by the A300 and A350 power duo, be sure to take a look at this special or the A100 + 18-200 lens at B&H Photo.

Sony A700 + 16-105 DT = $1532 shipped
Camera Equations! With no unknowns because you can read Sony A700 reviews at the DSLR Review Matrix, and Sony 16-105 DT lens reviews at SLR Gear, an Imaging Resource IPO site, and the recently launched dpreview lens review. It looks like we need more lens review sites. There are a million camera review sites, but only a few of them review lenses. The said combo is offered at, $1516 plus sixteen dollars for three-day Federal Express shipping.

Nikon P80 in-stock!
You do of course recall the Nikon P80, Nikon's new 18x superzoom, without RAW, but it's Nikon's first semi-serious superzoom since the 8700/8800. Well Cameta Cameras has created a bundle for it at Amazon, offering the P80, a 4gb SDHC card, a two-year extended service warranty, spare EL-EN5, camera case and a few trinkets for $440. Offered by Cameta on Amazon.

Ashton Kutcher's Blues
The Nikon Coolpix S550, blue color, yes, the camera advertised non-stop on TV by actor (very generous use of the word) Ashton Kutcher is now down to a new low price, $184 at Amazon. Will Greenwalt of CNet Networks has posted a review of this ultracompact.

It's a small world
In many lovely colors you can get the Olympus FE-340, for $170 at OneCall. This is an 8mp 1/2.5" camera, with a 5x pedestrian (36-180mm) optical zoom lens, 2.7" LCD, face detection, and such. Here is our coverage of its announcement in January 2008 among a group of new Olympus cameras. Olympus surely does like to make announcement waves with almost double-digit models.

And now a cutesy portable $120 digital camera, the silver Casio EX-Z75 offered by J&R World. This is your typical 7mp, 3x optical zoom, 2.5" LCD, SD, LiIon-based compact with the Casio Exilim style and features. We didn't include it in our Mother's Day Digital Camera Gift Ideas but it's certainly not a bad choice at $120.

Panasonic TZ4 segment
Adorama has some nice specials this week, starting with the Panasonic TZ4K for $230. This is the Robin of the TZ5/TZ4 duo, although as in the past, some people do prefer Robin over Batman (eg FZ4 over FZ5, TZ2 over TZ3, FZ15 over FZ20, etc).

While the TZ4 is not getting anywhere near the attention the TZ5 is getting, it has already received a handful of reviews! We start with the all-in-one-page Digital Camera Review review, then with the traditional Steve Digicam's review, and continue with the CNet Review by Lori Grunin. Be sure to read carefully, there will be a test at the end of the camera-semester :) For extra credit, you can also study the trusty Trusted Reviews review :)

Adorama specials
DxO Labs's DxO Optics Pro v 4.2, Standard Edition Photo Enhancing Software is on sale at $110 by Adorama, with free shipping. If you are not familiar with this software or the upgrade options, be sure to look them both up. There is version 5.0 out. We blog, you do the rest :)

If you are a bag-aholic, bag this bag: The Adorama Commander Camera & Notebook System Bag for $25. Do note that it is for laptops with 15" diagonal, so that perhaps explains the sales price since a lot of laptops are 15.4" widescreen these days. You can also do the math to see whether a 13.3" or 14" widescreen laptop would fit. We are too brain-dead too attempt math at this point :)

Have a small business? New Vostros!
A lot of photographers making a living with photography are also running or operating as small businesses. Which is how we segway to the brand new Dell Vostro Small business laptops that have started shipping! They are thinner, and lighter and probably cheaper too.

We are talking about the Vostro 1310 and 1510, starting at $600 at Dell Small Business. The Vostro 1310 is particularly of interest as it has a 13.3" widescreen. These of course are not intended as Photoshop workhorses, but rather as versatile performers for all the other tasks, organizational, browsing, e-paperwork, email, blogging, image transfer and temporary storage, etc.

And speaking of Dell Small Business, they also sell select digital cameras, and they have a sale of up to 25% off select cameras.

Stay tuned
And as always, making your purchases through this blog, allows this blog to continue making noise :)

This post will be updated throughout the weekend with new items as we find them, or as they find us :)
