Nikon D700 rumors hit the internets!

Thanks to Amin of Serious Compacts for the tip! Rumors with photographic evidence of a Nikon D700 DSLR have hit the internets in the last few hours while I was participating in a marathon needlepoint competition!

UPDATE: The Nikon D700 is no longer a rumor, it has been officially announced on July 1st, 2008.

The original thread at the Xitek forums appears to be "gone", but the discussions of the rumor are wild. There's a 4-page thread at Fred Miranda, and a couple of long threads at the Nikon Big-D dpreview forums discussing the rumor-leak and then another one proclaiming he saw one! A small thread is also discussing this in the non-denominational News forum.

If you want to "discover" this the way it played out, jump on the threads above! Spoiler alert! Spoilers follow :)

One of the regular rumoralia specialists in the dpreview forums has a no comment comment. No comment yet from Nikon super-guru Thom Hogan. If he posts an update, look for them in the main column of his blog.

A "Nikon D700" search at Amazon reveals nothing at the moment. So no Amazon listing or leak.

Mac users are discussing this as well, quite possibly hoping that the camera is compatible with the iPod and their favorite finger-painting program. Just kidding Mac fans :-)

One of the Nikon forums at Flickr is also discussing this, and so is this group of D300 users.

And a Radiohead fan starts a D700 discussion at the Full-frame police, arrest this DSLR!

What do the users of other brands think?
We start with Nikon's bitter rival, Canon users. Is the sky falling? How would it feel if Nikon came up with a new DSLR while the 5D Mark I still did not have a replacement?

Sony users are also talking about it, and considering the sensoric (not a real word) relationship between Nikon and Sony, they are always interested in what Nikon is doing because it could be the shape of things to come in the Alpha World. And Sony is an interesting case, they announced the A700, and then they blitzed it and undercut it with the A350/A300/A200 trio. We know there is a A900 flagship coming, but will they also announce a DSLR similar to the D700? And can they get the name back so they can call it A700? :) There is also Mark II, or perhaps "Alpha A700 Pro Duo Plus" :) We went back in the blog archives and noted that during the January Sony rumoralia, the name Alpha A500 was mentioned. This of course just pure speculation!

And speaking of Sony, "where is DK?", Alpha users are asking.

The actual rumor
Oops, we forgot to talk about the rumor, although if you read a few of the posts above, you know everything there is to know about it!

It will [allegedly] feature the (or a version/variation of) 12-megapixel CMOS 35mm-full-frame sensor found in the D3, along with 14-bit A/D conversion and 16-bit processing. On the other hand, Vista users can boast 64-bit processing :)

It is compatible with the existing MB-D10 battery grip, so that raises the question, is a D10 still coming? :)

Even more reactions
We missed this thread in the Nikon D300/D200/D100 dpreview forum, also discussing the D700.

And a 40+ comment discussion at the gadget blog Gizmodo, which offers a recap of the "made in China" rumor.

More coverage of the rumor at the Imaging Insider as well.

Update on July 2nd, 2008
The Nikon D700 is no longer a rumor. It is real! It was announced officially by Nikon, along with the SB-900 flash, and two PC lenses. [permalink]

Great round up! Pretty amazing all around response to this rumor, isn't it? I think this one's real, though the typos/small grammatical problems raise doubts. Thanks for the link =).

Thanks as well!

It certainly surprised with the name as the expectations were D10, D30, D300X, D400, etc! Maybe it's an homage to the D70?

Conspiracy theory: Maybe the typos are added for plausible deniability :)
