Canon 50D vs Nikon D90 Pre-Order Wars (updated)

The big rivalry is heating up again, Canon and Nikon announce new cameras back to back, so we thought to carry this one along by having a 50D vs D90 pre-order tracker.

Update! The 3rd Canon 50D configuration, 50D + the new 18-200 IS EF-S lens is now listed at Amazon again but you cannot pre-order it. The price was $1700 earlier when it was available for pre-ordering.

wrong comparison. D90 is not in same league w/ Canon xxD series. D90 should compare w/ Rebels 450D (or Xsi). 50D is competing with D300.

Oh this is not a camera-spec 50d vs D90 comparison but simply a matter of temporal and organizational convenience. It's an organizational tool if you like.

An actual comparison train could be interesting going XSi-450D vs D80 vs D90 vs 30D vs D200 vs 40D vs 50D vs D300 etc etc.

The 50D will help prevent anymore Canon users from switching to Nikon. No D300 owner will switch to Canon just for the 50D. It feels like a stop gap solution. Canon should have released a camera that obliterates the d300 in every way and force Nikon to play catch up. The D90's video feature is very compelling for first time dslr buyers and non-serious hobbyists. They will be looking at the 50d and 450d and decide on a feature and budget compromise. In that sense they do compete.

Great points. It is indeed coming in from underneath the D300, but perhaps Canon is planning to tag-team it with an "affordable" 35mm full frame above the D300 and below (in price) to the D700.

There are some rumors of a 7D and 5D Mark II, but that may be a bit too much, unless the 5D Mark II is boosted upwards a bit (it's been three years after all), thus creating enough space between the 50D and 5D MkII/D700 for a 7D or something else.

The video feature may also get some people who don't usually like/buy/use Nikon to give it a try. While from a purist perspective the video feature is "ewwww", if implementing video on a DSLR does not make any "photographic" comprises, it is a plus from a practical point of view even in the eyes of SLR purists/traditionalists.

I see B&H has the D90 as being released in October now. Weren't they saying second week of September before?

Great catch Monkeybutter! The original Nikon press release says "September 2008" under the "Price and Availability" section towards the bottom of the page.
