VIDI: The Squelchers are everywhere!

You have seen them in the photography forums, you have seen them in the photo-sharing sites, you have seen them in blog comments. Their raison d'etre is to squelch everything. "With that portfolio you better start flippin burgers", "That camera is trash", "you call that art?", "we don't do this around here", "unless you have camera/lens X all your pictures are worthless", etc, etc.

They are the squelchers (dictionary definition). They thrive by trying to keep everyone else down. They are not open to anything new or creative. They pathologically want to preserve their world-view status quo.

But let's not rush to action and throw all the squelchers in jail. While that may seem like a good idea on the surface, let's not overreact. Throwing them in prison will only make things worse, and it's just about the worse thing you can do to them. Let the therapists, counselors and medical professionals treat their addiction to squelching properly. Let's not become overreactive zealots and try to solve problems by throwing everyone in jail! Let's not become squelcher squelchers :)

PS> "VIDI" is our occasional Sunday faux-editorial, that on occasion touches upon semi-serious topics. Check out the previous installments for more.
