Bluehost.com has been great for many years now. With each account you get unlimited domains, unlimited emails, and virtually unlimited bandwidth. They also keep their servers updated with the latest versions of everything.

Stay away from iPowerWeb. Had lots of problems with them and the servers were always down.

I've hosted with many places over the years, from the low end (such as Dreamhost, etc.) to the high-end (DataPipe, etc.)

There is a big difference between a hosting company that just throws you on a vhost setup with 2000 other sites on the same server, and a virtual machine where you have some more protection from other sites bringing the server performance down.

At the upper end you can go with a dedicated server, but you don't need that, just mentioning for completeness.

So, in between is the sweetspot for you I think - virtual machine/vps/slices/whatever. Check out companies like Slicehost & Rimuhosting. For $20-40/month you can have some real nice performance you won't get from the lower-tier that is enticing you with the $6/month offering. You'll stand a better chance of holding up under a Digg/Slashdot effect.

As with lenses, you generally get what you pay for.

I use asmallorange.com and have had no problems, and they have had very quick responses to any questions I've had.

Site5.com is very kick ass. Never had downtime, and one domain error was resolved within hours with their support. Of course, if you use them, it'd be super sweet of you to reference "blackorange.ca" as your referrer.
